Jeep was the first company in the entire world to build SUV. Jeep is a brand of American automobiles that is a division of FCA(Fiat Chrysler Automobiles) US LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Fiat.
American icon jeep came to India last year with a bunch of pricy imports and that really didn’t leave that much of impression. But now with the ‘COMPASS’ Jeep can grab a significant position in the Indian market as the COMPASS is manufactured in INDIA ( Ranjangaon facility) and is available at an unbelievable price of Rs.14.95 lakh (ex showroom).
If you want to own the brand JEEP, then COMPASS is the cheapest vehicle you will get. Company has two more products viz., Grand Cherokee and Wrangler but being imported they are quite expensive. In their segments too they are expensive. So let’s see a bit more about
COMPASS.
FRONT LOOK
In comparison to it’s siblings i.e., Grand Cherokee and Wrangler, COMPASS is not that big but when viewed from the front it doesn’t seem that small. From some angle Compass reminds us of Grand Cherokee. We can say Compass as baby grand Cherokee.
The first thing which grab your attention is the signature 7 slot grille and those slightly sunken projector headlights with DRLs which works really well with the chrome finish.
The Clamshell bonnet is quite impressive which gives COMPASS a muscular look. The fog lights are quite large and those chrome finish in a rectangular way gives them a kick. The front bumper is quite impressive which gives you honeycomb design.
SIDE PROFILE
Side profile is very unique with chrome strip going all around the window lines and the black cladding with doors and the wheels is remarkable. With square wheel arches Compass got a muscular and SUV look. It is 4398 mm long, 1667 mm in height with 17 inches wheel base and a huge ground clearance of 178 mm. The most stylish part is the way black roof drops to the rear and shark fin like D-pillars.
BACK PROFILE
In rear view also, COMPASS looks very neat and those spoilers with roof rails wins the show. There’s a stop light in the middle of the spoiler and then you see the Jeep logo right in the centre. Black cladding along with the bumper and those rear Fog lamps are tremendous. Reflector glass and wrapped around LED tail lamps are heart winning and complete the rear view of Compass.
COMPASS INTERIORS
When you enter in the Compass the first thing you utter is ‘UNBELIEVABLE’. Jeep really spent a lot on Compass interiors. Compass has plush interiors with impeccable seat design. It has plenty of good quality stuff like metallic golf ball like gear knob, premium Alpine leather seats, nice soft feel dashboard and nice instrument panel. But, there are some things which do irritate you, like the shiny plastic around the AC wends and infotainment system. The infotainment system comes with Apple carplay and Android auto connect. But the infotainment system does not have internal GPS.
Space on the inside is huge with plenty of Leg and headroom. The seats are comfortable too and that red stitch on white alpine leather looks classy. The rear seats have also been optimised for India and China (mainly backrest and thigh room). There’s a USB charger plug in the rear seat with AC vents as well.
You’ll get Dual tone Automatic temperature control, 7 speed DDCT ( Dual Dry Clutch
Transmission), Electronic parking brakes and Hill start assist.
ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS
When it comes to the engines, Jeep offers you two options. First one is 1.4 Multiair Petrol engine with 162 ps and with a torque of 250 NM and second one is 2.0 Multijet II diesel engine that drives a force of 173 ps, putting out a torque of 350 NM. When you drive Compass you started loving it because it is comfortable ,pickup is impressive, suspension is optimum, whether you drive on highways or in cities it makes you comfortable. Talking about handling steering response is very good, it remains light at slow speed and gradually getting heavier as speed builds up.
Jeep is the pioneer in off roading and Compass also follows the same legacy. It has 4 wheel drive option namely Auto, Snow, Sand and Mud. Even if the desired mode is not selected and kept on Auto, the system senses the need and acts accordingly.
SAFETY FEATURES
Jeep guarantees over 50 safety and security features. It has a strong body structure and the vehicle is also equipped with Four-channel Anti-lock brakes, Electronic Stability Control, Hydraulic Boost Failure Compensation, full function Traction control, Panic Brake Assist, 6 Airbags and Roll Mitigation making it very safe vehicle as compared to the others.
So overall, Jeep has done a commendable job with made in India Compass and with it’s muscular squared-stance, signature grille, engine and off roading performance and the best part with it’s price it can grab a significant position in the Indian market and can eat the business of it’s rivals Hyundai Creta, Tucson and Mahindra XUV 500.
